Most store owners put their energy into getting new visitors through ads and social media. But the most profitable growth often comes from customers and subscribers you already have. That is where email marketing, and especially automated email flows, makes a big difference.
Flows are emails triggered by what a shopper does: signing up, browsing a product, abandoning a cart or making a purchase. You set them up once, and they keep working in the background. Here are the seven flows we set up first for every e-commerce brand.
1. Welcome series
Trigger: someone joins your email list.
New subscribers are at their most engaged, so this is your chance to make a strong first impression. A good welcome series usually has three to four emails:
- Deliver any promised incentive (such as a discount code) and say thank you.
- Tell your brand story and what makes your products different.
- Showcase best-sellers or customer favourites, with reviews.
- Remind them about the offer before it expires.
2. Abandoned cart
Trigger: a shopper adds items to their cart but does not check out.
Abandoned carts are one of the biggest leaks in any online store, and this flow is usually the highest earner. Send the first reminder within a few hours, showing the exact products left behind. Follow up with a second email that answers common objections (shipping, returns, sizing) and, if your margins allow, a third with a small incentive.
3. Browse abandonment
Trigger: a known subscriber views a product but does not add it to their cart.
This is a softer nudge than the cart reminder. Show the product they looked at, along with similar items or reviews. Keep it helpful rather than pushy: “Still thinking it over? Here is what other customers say.”
4. Post-purchase thank you and onboarding
Trigger: a customer places an order.
The experience after checkout shapes whether a customer buys again. Go beyond the order confirmation with:
- A warm thank-you from the brand.
- Tips for using or caring for the product.
- What to expect with delivery, and how to reach support.
This reduces “where is my order?” messages and returns, and builds trust for the next purchase.
5. Review request
Trigger: a set number of days after delivery.
Reviews boost conversions on your website and on marketplaces. Time the request for when the customer has had a chance to use the product, make leaving a review as easy as possible, and consider asking for a photo review. Happy reviewers can then be invited to refer a friend.
6. Cross-sell and replenishment
Trigger: a purchase of specific products, or the typical time it takes to use one up.
If you sell consumables such as skincare, supplements or pet food, remind customers to reorder just before they run out. For other products, recommend accessories or complementary items based on what they bought.
7. Win-back
Trigger: a customer has not purchased for longer than your usual buying cycle.
It costs less to bring back a past customer than to acquire a new one. Start with a friendly “we miss you” message highlighting what is new, then follow with an incentive if they still do not return. Customers who never re-engage can be suppressed to keep your list healthy and your deliverability strong.
Best practices for all your flows
- Segment your list. First-time buyers, repeat customers and VIPs should not all get the same message.
- Write for mobile. Most emails are opened on phones, so use short paragraphs, large buttons and clear images.
- Keep the brand consistent. Your emails should look and sound like your website and social media.
- Do not over-discount. Use incentives strategically so customers do not learn to wait for a code.
- Test and measure. Track open rates, click rates and revenue per recipient, and A/B test subject lines and timing.
- Stay compliant. Only email people who opted in, include an unsubscribe link and follow the privacy rules of each market you sell in.
Which tool should you use?
Popular e-commerce email platforms such as Klaviyo, Mailchimp and Omnisend integrate directly with Shopify and WooCommerce, so purchase and browsing data flows straight into your automations. The best choice depends on your list size, budget and how advanced your segmentation needs to be.
How email fits into your wider marketing
Email works best alongside your other channels. Paid social and search bring new visitors in, pop-ups and lead magnets turn them into subscribers, and flows convert them into loyal customers. Together they lower your acquisition costs and increase the lifetime value of every customer.
